Insight of the Prostitution Industry from a KTV Parlor Owner
Before the 1990s, Chinese immigrants who sought a better life came to the United States through a "Shetou." Their passports were taken away until they could pay the transportation fee. The fee rose from 10k to 80k dollars in those years. While the men could find restaurant jobs to pay off their voyage fees, these opportunities rejected women. Therefore, the only few jobs they could do included prostitution. After the 1990s, the motive became mainly related to money. This quick money source inspired many immigrants from China to the United States. Many of them had previously done similar jobs in cities like Shenzhen. Even though they are doing the same thing, this occupation earns way more in the United States. At that time, if one person from the family works in the United States, the money one earns can feed the entire family.
There are mainly TWO types of prostitutes in Flushing; one is the street workers. They would say "massage" to every man passing them. The massage is more than a massage; it is a sex trade. However, many refused to admit to this. Another type is those that work in the KTV that provides drinking service, which is to drink and sing with the clients. Most do not offer sex. However, the KTV will not stop them if the "xiaojie" and the client agree. This happens. The money they earn from these services can add up to twenty thousand monthly. The only motive behind all these is MONEY. Another notable thing he mentioned was that there isn't that much human trafficking these days. Most joined voluntarily.
